We’re always getting served by people – the delivery driver, cashier or table service at a restaurant.
I’m starting to hand out a Thank You card with a little gospel message in it … and a tip obviously!
Here’s my first draft for the card.
“It was great to meet you just now. Thank you for your service
Did you know that you are following in the footsteps of Jesus?
There’s a story in the Bible – you can read about it in John Chapter 13 – where Jesus is having dinner with his close followers. It’s all a bit awkward because no-one was there to serve by washing their feet before they ate (when people wear sandals & walk along hot and dusty streets you’ll know why this was a polite thing to do!).
This is when Jesus, very humbly began to serve:
‘So he got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing, took a towel, and tied it round himself. Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied round him.’(John 13:3-5).
Can you imagine King Charles or the Prime Minister doing this for you? But that’s just what Jesus Christ (the King) did. He was willing to serve…
And that’s not all. Washing his followers feet was a picture of a far greater cleansing that Jesus came to bring us today. We’ve all been ruined in some way by our sin. The stain is not just on the outside – the things we do, but also on the inside – our sinful hearts.
So how did Jesus serve us? He suffered and died on a cross in the place of sinners – taking the punishment for sin. It’s the blood of Jesus – God’s Son (his life given at the cross) that can cleanse us from all sin and unrighteousness (See 1 John 1:7,9).
You can ask Jesus to serve you in this way.
He didn’t stay dead. 3 days later he rose again and is serving all kinds of people like this today.
When you deliver a parcel or serve a meal in a restaurant the customer pays. But when Jesus serves us by cleansing us through his cross its Jesus who pays!
So what’s stopping you from turning to God from your sin today and asking Jesus to cleanse you too?
He will you know. He’s the greatest servant of all.
Thank you for serving me today.
Skully
Ps. you can find out more about Jesus by reading the Gospel of John (one of the 4 accounts of Jesus in the Bible), which is where this story is found.
If you’ve got questions about God, the world and you then check out these videos called the 321 Course.
Or send me a message? I’d love to hear from you

What do you think? Too cringy? Too long? How would you improve it? Do you do anything similar?
